In this article, we cover what a few of those signs are.

When is it time to upgrade your heater?

While there are quite a few signs to look out for, in this article we cover the six most important things to look out for when it comes to upgrading your heater.

1.   Your heater is older than 10 years

A home heating system usually lasts between 10 and 15 years. If yours is older than 10 years, it may be time for an upgrade. The reason for this is that components start to break down after this time, which will lead to not only more repairs, but more expensive ones. We explain this further below.

2.   You are having to repair your heater more often than you should

If your heater is breaking down frequently or needs constant repairs, it’s likely that it’s on its way out and a new one is needed. As we mentioned above, after ten years things can start to go wrong as the parts reach the end of their lives.

3.   Your repairs are getting more expensive

If the cost of repairing your heater keeps increasing, it may be time to consider upgrading to a newer model. Over time, you may find that larger components of your heater start to break down. While in the early years of your heater a repair may have been minor and not costly, at the end of its life you’ll find that the repairs are more significant and more expensive. If so, it’s time to look at an upgrade. In the long run, you’ll actually be saving money. Consider it an investment.

4.   There are odd noises coming from your heater

If you can hear strange noises coming from your heater, this could be a sign that it’s wearing down and needs to be replaced. The noises are usually warnings that something has broken down, or is about to. As the years go on, so you’ll start to hear more unexpected noises coming out of your heater as it reaches the end of its life.

5.   You’re experiencing cold air or low airflow

One of the most common signs that it’s time for a new heater is if you’re experiencing cold air or low airflow. This means that your current heater isn’t working properly and needs to be replaced. If this is the case, not only is your heater ineffective but it’s probably working harder to try to heat up your home. This means you’ll most likely have a higher electricity bill as well.

6.   You are noticing a lot of dust

If you are experiencing a lot more dust in your home, it may not be coming from outside. If your heater isn’t properly maintained, dust will be cycled through your home. This is especially true of older heaters that are in need of being upgraded.
